Yes i believe the previous owner told me it has an unthreaded ahead type headset.

Thanks Charlieboy! i'll have to organise some extreme uphill bike rides so that hopefully everyone else will be too knackered to pass me on the downhill as i potter down carefully!

Yes, but both Marzocchi and Pace forks of that era had replaceable steerers and you can still get new Marzocchi ones, which would be long enough.
