Help please,White industries Crank for 1995 team marin ?

I seem to be getting two different opinions :)
I to thought it should of had the one in the Marin Catalogue, but the original owner was adamant that it came with that crank, after doing some digging today i found out off a guy that used to sell/work on this same bike ,he seemed to recall that for some reason they wasn't always sold with the White industries crank !?
I asked him if he could remember what other crank they was sold with and he said XT   ...i said might it of been Sugino crank ,he said possibly

That's what you get with catalogues! You may find (as is the case with a LOT of American bikes in Europe in particular) that the cat spec is not always accurate to what was on the bike when it was assembled.. Supply issues being the main reason why.

Likewise different colour options crop up later in a year after the catalogue came out, so you can have bikes which 'never existed' in official records, etc..
Then there's the very American habit of naming models a year in advance (so many '1996' models came out in Sept 1995, for example..)

According to RB's fairly comprehensive catalogue collection, your '95 bike should indeed come with a White Industries 'by Sugino' crankset:

If you do want a set, I have some (non-polished) that I would gladly let you have for less than 36 quid too!

Actually guys i think the that i know that used to work on them was right ,some of these team Marin s did come with the sugino cranks instead of the white industries crank, there is a team marin now for sale on ebay with the same sugino crank fitted as mine ,check out below the bike on ebay below ¬

The Team Marin you are referring to is just about as far away from original as you can get. It's totally custom built.

I don't think your bike ever came with the crank that is mounted on it now.

I Just thought it a bit of a big coincidence that apart from the owner being adamant that it came with that crank,a guy i know that worked/sold the Team Marin said it wasnt always fitted with a white industries crank , and now there is a team marin with the same sugino style crank thats fitted to mine, what the odds on that being a coincidence ?? ..oh well worth a try

The chap you know could have been talking about other years. The WI crank and part where there big selling and marketing point. Sugino did make them though. 17 years can easily muddle the mind. I don't know of course if they ever sold with a bog standard cheaper Sugino brand crank, but I doubt it as it wouldn't be good for the image and WI were still used the following year.

Of course in 1996 I think there was some messing around as there seemed to be many iterations of the same bike, some having WI, some having XT. but hey ho not my period of interest so quite hazy.

Any of you guys know why this white industries crank is slightly closer to the frame ?
I have used the rings that was on the other crank ,they seemed to fit fine ,but as this crank is sat closer to the frame the front mech needs setting up ,something i am shite at

My friend bought a 95 Eldridge Grade in 95 and it was fitted with WI cranks, they had the logo etched/cut into the crank and I believe those are the American made cranks - my 96 IFT has WI cranks however they have a black decal which I believe are the Sugino made models.

The initial WI run would have been stretched as far as possible but Marin made a lot of bikes and eventually (by the next production year certainly) had Sugino WIs.
