Ever since I was a wee lad (or 1992 whichever was most recent) I dreamed of owning a Yo Eddy. At the time I wanted to have the Yellow to Dark Blue fade but since then a couple other colors have grown on me. Potentially, Rody from Groovy Cycle Works would to the respray, he appears quite handy with authentic Fat work: http://groovycycleworks.com/fatproducts.aspx

Here is my Yo in Chameleon Metallica:

I am going to get it repainted due to chipping, lite surface rust and damaged decals, should I get it repainted ......

a. Yellow / Blue like I first envisioned

b. The iconic Team Violet

c. Just love the Aqua Fade

d. Keep it true to stock - Chameleon Metallica all the way!

Keep in mind the parts are XTR M900 silver with black seatpost/stem, silver handlebar and original (grey) Tioga Disc Drive. Also I am keeping the rigid fork which will be repainted to a faithful replica of the appropriate color scheme. (Above pic does not reflect current parts on bike, I will add a pic of current bike look ASAP)

Thanks for your input!

Cheers

The AquaFade pic is not visable, but this is how AF looks :) =>

No matter which one you choose, you have a very tough time reproducing it. Recently Ed told me an interesting theory: Maybe it is better to do a paint that could be of FAT than trying to reproduce an exicting.

Top choices, all would look great and I went through a similar process when I had a Yo resprayed about this time last year.

For what it's worth, I understand that the Team Grellow (or at least the grellow part) and Aquafade are very difficult to reproduce accurately and possibly the others too. I'd probably not respray at all unless very tatty indeed as it looks pretty good as is from the photo.

If you are set on a respray though I'd go for the Team Lavender option.

Oh, and here's the respray that I ended up with

I've always like the Chameleon - so that would get my vote. I've missed 2 XL chameleons now :(

The paint is in fair condition but there are a lot of small nicks and many of the decals are cracked or worn off completely. The top tube has several very noticeable parts where the levers have scraped the paint of in large areas.

I am having it repainted by Roddy in Ohio who has done hundreds of Fat resprays and has all the codes, decals, repair equipment, etc so Im not too worried about color or fade accuracy as I have seen a lot of his work and it is top flite.

The sunset fade is beautiful but just isnt iconic fat in my mind. BTW I voted that bike for BoTM October ;)

I completely agree with everything that EdEdwards says, but I would just like to enlarge on two of his points:

1. his splendid Yo Eddy is essentially an English gentleman's take on what the brilliant Fat Chance designers might have come up with had they been limited to the Italian colour palette that is all that is available in this country - you may be more fortunate in California, but it does point up the dilemma that Fat Chance colours are not just very difficult, but often impossible to reproduce

2. surely a Fat Chance should be repainted only if it is absolutely necessary to preserve the frame from rust, otherwise it should be discreetly and respectfully repaired. No, really, the genuine Fat Chance paint job is an inspired part of mtb history, and every example of it should be saved if at all possible.

Man, that's one tough decision! :?

All the Fat colours are so perfect, I love the (recently discovered for me  ) Chameleon but who can argue with Aqua-fade, and Team Lavender just kicks ass!

Goddamn!!

As mentioned there are sizable sections that are completely paint free and a few that have already flash/surface rusted and Im pretty sure they will become rust issues if not dealt with in time. Several of the decals are damaged, most notably the non drive chainstay near the dropout Chris Chance signature is worn from shoe abrasion. From what I gather, Fat paints were notorious for chipping and decals notorious for cracking and wearing through.

I wouldnt trust my baby with just anyone and have seen amazing results from the painter I have found. He stocks all the colors and decals for all the original paint schemes and his work is simply fantastic.
