Hi there is there any Internet experts on here, I am having trouble with my Internet connection. It works fine in the daytime but at nights it doesn't work and it's peeing ms off. I am on laptop and xbox playing online now and all fine but at night times on the router the Internet conection is a red light and no connection. Last night it had a green light and that means connected but just 1 computer would work which was wires work computer. Laptops , and the few xboxes in house wouldn't work, nor would my itouch conect. Is it the broadband company or is it my router???

Quite possibly your supplier. Had similar issues with Demon to whom I'd paid a great deal of money over the course of 7 years. Connection would go down in the evenings (ie when busy). Blamed my kit, line, router etc etc. In the end changed provider, no more problems :?

That said worth trying another router if you have one available.

Yea I thought it must be the provider as the two nights before we had the red light saying no connection, then last night had all green lights, and still wasn't working apart from the 1 computer which was work computer of the wives. No other laptops would work. It's really frustrating. The wife said it was working for a while then in the end her computer didn't work.

It's done it again tonight bloody Internet connection , the wife phoned provider up and was left waiting around for ages then got speaking to a woman. Then the woman test the line and hung up and didn't bother phonig back, so wife phoned back and it said was shut. It is meant to be 24 hour service. Going to phone and threaten to cancel it all as it's getting joke now.

isn't there supposed to be some sort of contention ratio which means there's a maximum number of people sharing the same broadband connection at the local junction box (or whatever it's called) - perhaps yours has a very high ratio meaning more people share it so you get less service at night when it's busy?

It's normally 50:1 which means upto 50 people can be connected to the same line. Some premium services are 20:1 and some business packages are 1:1 (although you pay well over £100 per month for that).

My broadband is noticeably slower between 4 and 10pm, and for most of the weekend, as that's the most common times for people to be online.

At one point I had a period of 6 weeks where my broadband wasn't much faster than dial-up, and some days when it didn't work at all, and it turned out that this was due to the service being over-subscribed. They installed more machinery in the exchange and it's all been fine since. :)

My broadband basically grind to a halt in the evenings because of the number of users on the exchange.

However, I have just heard that Microsoft have been cutting off users who chip their X Boxes to allow them to play pirate game. I wouldn't suggest that's what happened here, but it is frightening that they can tell if you have chipped the box remotely.
