Bought a set of Manitou 2's for a future project. The forks were rock hard with no movement whatsoever, so I stripped them down only to find they are filled with a horrible sticky gunk (I assume this is whats left of the elastomers). Problem is how can I get rid of it, it's stuck to pretty much everything.

Also any info on Manitou 2's would be greatly appreciated (diagrams, sourcing elastomer etc).

hot water is good, but im in similar dilemma

Tried that and it seems to make to worse. I now have it stuck to the kitchen sink, i'm in deep shit if I can't get it off before the missus gets back.

not really a problem in my house, the wife doesn't know where the kitchen is

I've not found much that will clean the stuff, without removing your skin, and the anodizing and finish of the fork parts. My Manitou 3 from the Beast is wall-art for this very reason...that and it wasn't a very good fork even when it worked!

I have the same problem at work, I found Mineral Turps frees broken down elastomers a treat.

Doesn't appear to affect anything else much, if the forks are that bad the bushes and seals will be toast anyway

the best thing Ive used several times over the last few months ( doing two sets of mani's) is a length of cane to get the worst out then very hot water and a shit load of washing up liquid-in fact I bought and used an entire bottle of wilkinsons cheapo stuff just for it. Worked wonders and all forks are now sparkly inside and out, just don't let the water cool down too much as it solidifies, and give youself a fair bit of time as its not a quick job, and remember to caustic soda your drains after as they could well be coatedin the stuff, and........

so i've all this to look forward to when the bargin £11 mani 2's i accidentally bought off evil bay the other day turn up then. hooray! i honestly didn't think i'd 'win' them.... strange how you don't get the things you want (like the rc 35's with 1 1/4 steerer a while back) & get the ones you're not arsed about, like the mani's....... ho hum
