I've built up my old Specialized Hardrock,i've fitted an 8 speed XT cassette which all works fine apart from when I want to select the smallist cog the chain rubs a little bit on the inside of the chainstay(?)directly above the cassette. Iwas going to sand/grind a small amount of metal from the area to releive the problem or fit a washer between the spindle and frame to create a bit of space or buy a narrower/mdern chain. What do we think peeps I am currently clutching at straws.

Are you fitting an 8spd cassette to a 7spd hub?

You might be able to change some washers over on the axle to make it work, but it won't be ideal i think.

sounds like the spacers are set up wrongly on the axle. You need to shift everything across a bit.

I agree with Orange 71, the spacers are off, or you just need to add one washer to the outside for clearance-don't grind on the frame.

sorted

Thats fixed it. found an appropriate sized washer in my 'box of bits',runs clean as a whistle now, cheers folks.
