Hello - Going back to my roots

Retro Newbie
Hello Everyone,
I'm Paul from Portsmouth, into fishing, golf and metal detecting and as if I need anymore hobbies, now restoring and old Raleigh Wayfarer, which according to the Sturmey Archer hub is 34 years old.

My dad and me used to fix up old bikes (mainly for me) when I was a kid, more out of necessity than choice and nowadays I find myself harking back to those times in more ways than one.

Anyway, long story short. I've just purchased a Raleigh Wayfarer in reasonable nick for the grand sum of £50. I could have bought a second hand mountain bike for half that but decided (much to the other halfs amusement) that the mountain bike unlike the Raleigh lacked soul.
So.......the Raleigh has been stripped and I'm now cleaning/restoring the parts ready to put it back together again. Can't stop going to the shed just to look at it!
I'd really appreciate any help/advise on this project with some pointers as to what part of the forum/WWW to look in for info regarding this type of bike.

Regards

wayfarer

When it was time to get my first bike I wanted a Raleigh Chopper. That didn't happen as my parents said it was dangerous because when I braked I would go over the small front wheel. So I decided a nice Raleigh Olympus racing bike would fit the bill. No, again, the drop handlebars would cause a curvature of the spine! So I ended up with a Raleigh Wayfarer. In my mind an old mans bike (and my mates). So I wouldn't have one now for love nor money but all the same good luck with your restoration.

Incidently by younger brother got both a Chopper and later a Raleigh Europa but I'm not bitter and I don't bring the subject up about 2-3 times a year.

All the best

Got a thing for 3 speeds myself.
There's a couple of American sites (where they seem to be more popular?) called "old three speed gallery .com" and "lovely bike blog spot .com" that could provide inspiration/information!?

just finished putting back together an elderly Phillips (unsure of exact model) togglechain bike complete with sturmey archer 3 speed set up , see link first 11 pics are of the Phillips others are off another project awaiting start .

just ensure you enjoy it once finished and get another project ready for afterwards

Thanks for all the help guys, I'll save those links. I'll be in the shed all weekend and hopefully will have put it together for Sunday.
