Headset Stack Height - Saturday Update

Yeah the disparity between your measurements and Velobase's does seem a bit excessive. I had about 2mm disparity between their measurements and mine, until I realised you have to subtract the locknut lip, along with maybe a mm. underneath it so the locknut can 'lock' the top-cup before it bottoms out on the lip, if you see what I mean? It just occurred to me that someone might think that matching the headset stack-height with the frame stack-height is ultra-critical because the locknut-lip is supposed to tighten onto the end of the steerer-tube- That is exactly what is not supposed to happen. When the headset is installed and properly adjusted, you should still have a little space between the locknut-lip and the end of the steerer.

For this reason, if you measured the frame as 35mm stack, you should be OK with a headset with a stated stack-height of up to 36-37mm- You can see on my photo of a Campag. locknut that the thread stops short of the lip, anyway.

The important thing, especially with an alloy headset/locknut, is to engage as much of the locknut thread as you can on the steerer thread- not to suggest that a steel headset/locknut should be seen as an opportunity to take liberties...

Thanks, i thought 2 - 3mm would be acceptable but the DA one is odd and might be something to do with the washers/seals.

So the starting point for the headset should be 35 and above - provided the measurements are correct. I did note that someone mentioned velobase is maybe not the most accurate sometimes.

Thanks (again),

Richard

I do, have i miscalculated?

Total height - 600 mm (6 cm)
Stems 2 x 100 mm (2 cm)
Lock nut - 4 mm (0.4cm) - ahhh ok. But that means the height is worse!!!

Richard

WTF do you get 600mm from??
6cm = 60mm

The Tange Levin stack height is 37.8mm
Top stack minus locknut lip thickness = 25.7
Lower stack = 12.1

LOL I did mention i could not count later in the thread but thanks for reminding me!!

Sorry I didn't see that, I couldn't be arsed to read all the thread just the title that you wanted to know the Tange Levin headset stack height.

LOL Thanks anyway - i felt stupid enough when i realised my error - nice to be reminded!!

Perhaps measuring things after night shift is a bad idea!

An ending - thanks to everyone for the pointers - i received a new headset from one of RBs sponsors - Cycle Clinic. Malcolm did a great job getting me one which fits!!! Thanks v much Malcolm.

I fitted it today - and it is excellent.

And i got a few other bits added - at long last!!!

Thanks all,

Richard

Hi,

It is a Tange Seiki Falcon has a stack height of 35.3mm and is alloy. I am very pleased with it and I got some use out of the old Tange crown race as it served to help putting the new race in position.

Thanks again Malcolm.

Richard
