Headset Stack Height - Saturday Update

Re: Headset Stack Height

Stack height needs to be a few mm longer than Tel's measurement to make sure the lock ring does not foul the top of the threads of the steerer tube. Stick a 2mm washer in :)

If you have a locknut with a plastic washer at the top then that's not critical as the plastic will be pushed aside by the steerer tube.#

Re: Headset Stack Height

My little stack-height photo-essay..for both frame and headset. hopefully largely self explanatory:

Subtract thickness of locknut-lip, as in mattr's pic:

There have undoubtedly been several Tange 'Levin' headsets over the years in various styles, materials, and stack-heights. I have an alloy Levin Super Record clone with IIRC 37mm stack.

Re: Headset Stack Height

Torqueless,

Thanks for taking the time to do that - it makes sense. Now i just need time to get the Arabesque off and the ruler out.

Re: Headset Stack Height

sorry, I've not read all 4 pages of this thread, only the OP and I reckon 33mm is an error. Apologies if "error" is a strong word and I'm the one in error by having misunderstood your post. Anyway, I reckon you should be looking at around 40mm for Tange Levin/Campag record etc.

I remember as a youngster spending a lot of time with my mate who worked for a framebuilder and their rule of thumb, unless the customer wanted different was for the fork length to be 40mm longer than the frame's headtube.

I had the photos on my hard drive for ages. I think they may have originally been destined for Finney's thread, but my picture hosting site was un-cooperative to uploading at the time, so they never made it there... so it's nice to have the opportunity to use them.

These stack-height threads do go on, don't they? There should be a 'Stack Sticky' storing several stack stories simultaneously.

Re: Headset Stack Height

I would like a series of threads relating to mechanical issues - like the tub one or electronic one. This thread meanders too much but there is some solid info here too.

Thanks.

Re: Headset Stack Height

Saturday update -

I measured the stack height by Torqueless' plan - it is 35mm

I then measured the headsets I had handy -
Arabesque - 42mm
Tange Levin - 46mm
DA 7400 - 42mm
These measurements DO NOT have the lock nut space subtracted.

I then checked Velobase for a comparison -
Arabesque - 38mm
Tange Levin - 38.2mm
DA 7400 - 36.3mm

There seems some disparity between my measurements and Velobase - moreso with the DA so I am not sure what is wrong.

Anyway, I need a 1'' English threaded headset with 35mm stack. This makes sense as the headsets I have are all too tall.

Thanks all,

Richard

Back again,

Has anyone any suggestions for a headset as described above? The Tange one (Passage) which i was going to buy is too short at 30mm, any suggestions welcome.

How close does the stack height have to be +/- 1mm?

Richard
