Headset Stack Height - Saturday Update

Re: Headset Stack Height

Just in from the garage and according to my measurements the stack height of the current Tange Levin seems to be 37mm. This seems to be higher than i was expecting as i had tried a Shimano 600 and it was too tall and velobase gives the height for the Shimano as 33.5mm. I must be measuring something wrong as SJS gives the Levin stack height as 33.3mm.

Pondering on...

Re: Headset Stack Height

You've probably not allowed for the lip on the lock nut, that will take ~4 mm off the stack.

Re: Headset Stack Height

It seems i am doing something wrong - stupidity and SpecSavers may be to blame.
Total height = 600mm
2 x Stems = 200mm
Lock nut = 40mm
Stack height = 360mm

I will give it another go. Unless as my headset is older, it may not be the same as the current Levin.

Thanks all,

Richard

Re: Headset Stack Height

Assemble the headset on a rolled up toilet roll middle, see how long it is and then subtract the length of the two sections that go in the frame...

I guess it will be less than 0.6 metres.

Pics of the headset with tube etc

So 600mm total, minus 2 x 100mm for the stems and minus 40mm (ish) for the locknut = 360mm. Where am i going wrong?

Re: Headset Stack Height

Bit of a meandering thread but I had many of the same questions some months ago ... viewtopic.php?f=12&t=256757 ... I got there in the end & it isn't difficult to suss once you've worked out the lengths ... there's a diagram from Danson67 on the thread that makes it very simple, so much so even I could suss it!

Re: Headset Stack Height

To me , that looks like a 40mm stack height in total so you need to find something similar to that . The 33mm one will fit but you will need a lot of spacers which look ugly . Your best bet is to cut the steerer down , or get someone else to , judging by your measuring

Re: Headset Stack Height

I do, have i miscalculated?

Total height - 600 mm (6 cm)
Stems 2 x 100 mm (2 cm)
Lock nut - 4 mm (0.4cm) - ahhh ok. But that means the height is worse!!!

Re: Headset Stack Height

Finney, That is helpful - thanks.

Still strikes me as odd that the stack is so high. And i would rather not use a load of spacers.
