Headset related query - tight spot at the back, ha ha!!

Fork with bars and wheel ffitted should have feee movement undwr gravity.

If bearing have cages, you checked they are correct orientaion, im sure they are.... also headset is not overtightened.

If you have long enough vernier calliper, measured distance betwwen cups at 4 quarter positions.

Try another fork or headset?

Re:

It's one of these fairly generic eBay ones with sealed/cartridge bearings by the looks, I do have another spare one I may try. Sure it will be fine with a bit of fettling....maybe it will settle right down in use. I may fiddle with it more once I change the stem for something less bulky....

I checked, and the top cover has a step down in it that fits exactly over the expander wot not, so it's not that. Sure it will settle if it was fine for you Lynne.

I hope so Kaz - fingers crossed but as 02gf74 says it should move freely. Can't think what else could be causing it but as said maybe try a different stem/spacer orientation (probs stating the obvious here  , but the top cap is not binding on the fork steerer is it?).

Re:

No, there's a 5mm gap there, more than enough....

It's really free until you have the bars almost backwards, so sure it it maybe just a tad over tightened now. Will tinker further in the next day or two

Ignore me Kaz, I'm talking total rubbish, that shouldn't make any difference at all  I haven't had a beer yet - I talk far more sense after a few IPAs :P

Re:

Have you tried it without any cable hooked up? It's not just the cables restricting the handlebars from turning is it?

Re:

Sorted! :P

Well, in theory at least. I've proved my theory, now just need to get another stem....

I found one of those very thin scuff washer type things, and thinking I was being all clever, put that in against the bearing race cover, under the stem, thinking that would deform a little if necessary if the stem wasn't quite flush in all places. No difference at all.

At this point, I left the whole bike in a very cold workshop, gave it a good talking to and a damn good thrashing with a large branch, and came back in, in a strop. As I calmed down a bit with a cider, I started thinking, what I actually need is another stem, in case it's that that's really warped on the base or something. Didn't think I had another one, until I saw the NOS one that the frame came with looking at me from under the chair!

So I went back out with that and tried it instead, and it's a lot better - still a tight spot, but at the front now, and not so bad. As that stem is far too long, I need to get another anyway, and at the same time I'll get one with a far lower 'stack height', if you see what I mean, as both the ones I've been trying are very deep (a bit like me  ) as in, 50mm, so I wonder if a shallower stack height and more spacers instead would make the whole thing more pliable.

As I say, wonderful theory, and tomorrow I should have access to a few options if I can get over my mate's bike shop for a few hours. He'll probably happily swap the stem I was trying for something more suited anyway, so we'll see. Might be able to sort it Sunday then....
