Headset harmony: 3D tech helps 80s hero.

One of my all time favourite components is a Shimano 600ex headset: beautifully over built, but with a finish that is as fragile as it is wonderful, and adorned with kooky non-standard star-shaped locking faces.



They need a special tool which is often more expensive than the headset (or old bike you just bought because of the headset). As a result many have been bodged with vice grips and other work arounds. Well here’s a cunning thing: 3D printed adapters that allow you to use a standard 36mm spanner. And they work. Available on the Bay (I have no affiliation - just sharing a useful thing.)

Interesting idea. not convinced of the torque loading of the plastic, but for low torque applications it should work just fine.
clever to allow a split too, so you can get them on and off.

Yes, you’re right: I’ve just been trying it out on a stubborn frame that hasn’t been touched in an age and it’s struggling. Useful for adjusting good sets so you don’t scratch the finish, rather than wrangling shitters.

They are cool headsets. I didn't have the tool but managed to avoid any damage by gripping it through very thick leather (with slip-joint pliers I think).

Similarly, I’ve used a fabric oil filter strap before, but as I’ve got a couple on the go (including a stubborn SOB) will have to splash out on some wrenches - noticed today that there are some repro ones about these days.

I bought a laser cut rip off £15 from Poland. Edit I just checked, sadly no longer available it would seem.
Genuine spanners seem to be £30-40 which in the scheme of things could be worse.
