Headset bust, supplemental

After installing the headset correctly... (OK the bike shop did it) there is still some very slight play - I haven't been able to fully locate it but is there a good chance there could be some play in the actual forks themselves? (Pace RC37) - They are old and to my knowledge never been serviced (although not highly used/damaged)

Just thinking long term whether to splash out on refurbing the Pace forks, or maybe looking into a different type of fork setup for my 957, maybe contemplating a return to the more OEM looking Girvin setup? (not experienced with how good the oem girvins are though)

Play in the forks is possible, you should be able to see that, could also be the canti's, could also be that pace shim thing everyone who really know these forks kept talking about, tighten the headset a bit more to see if that eliminates it.

I almost fear to ask, but you have finally got a pace race collar installed haven't you? If so then yes it could be another problem, if not then it is most likely the cause.

Honestly if you look at my bikes below you will see they all have things in common, I have a wee bit of experience of installing pace forks.

The bike shop said the race collar was not needed, and simply installed the headset in correctly for me. :) The race collar is sellopated to my handlebar in the clear plastic bag it came in....

Well if there isn't a race collar installed then it is wrong and you will get play. May I ask which shop? I fear you have been sold dud advice by them. Without seeing it upclose and personal I can't be sure why they think it isn't needed, however the race collar is an essential part on pace forks with removeable bolt in steerers.

Please humour me and fit it, I'm tired of stressing the need of this part to you. If I'm wrong feel free to rub it in. But on the info available and with a deep suspicion of the knowledge possessed by people in shops I don't know or trust I am pretty confident in my advice.

, could also be the canti's,

this was true in my case.

After plenty of faffing with the headset, flapping that my Manitou forks may be fubar'd, I noticed some play in the cantilever brakes, they rock fore & aft slightly on the brake bosses. Which gave a similar feeling to a loose headset when the front brake was applied.

I've little experience of Pace suspension forks, but you may as well follow the advice given to you and fit the Race Collar, you have nothing to lose, and it sounds like it may be the answer to your problem.

I do have a separate thread about brake pad wobble, so maybe this is the play I am experiencing. It really is very small though. With a min-heatwave forecasted this weekend I am planning on spending some time on the bike. :) Shall take a more focussed look at it.

+1 - if there is no race collar the crown race will not fit correctly surely? Ie it will move about as it will be too loose on the steerer.

I would also add that a lot of bike shops have lost the experience of looking after old kit that has changed over time so don't always take as gospel.

+1

Bear in mind that, with all respect to them, some bike shop workers wouldn't have even been in double figures when the parts we use regularly were made. It's often not in the shops interest to keep up to date, unlike the motor trade, for example.

if its just a small bit of play then it maybee just a stack up of stuff
pads ,fork bushes etc
if its a marked clunk it could be the above ^
