But will that be our undoing bearing in mind what flags and banners have done in the past.

But the union is breaking up and so is administative areas within those regions and furthermore people are becoming individuals, social cohesion is being eroded, why ?

And to what end, when we fear everyone else ?

And what then ?

But the English are disliked the world over

I reckon it is more Britain that is disliked, if anything, on the back of the empire and some unfortunate political involvements of late.

Some of the world may 'hate', but the English and their (British) traditions are loved in plenty of places. Mixed bag really.

Plenty of countries are ambivalent to a huge number of other countries.

I have to add that I have never encountered a country or people who did not love Scotland and things Scottish, including the people.

This is usually the result of the Nessie, Scotch and Highlander Culture triumvirate.

Like these for example?

There is plenty of evidence that the localisation of decision making enhances social cohesion.

Something that is happening though seeing as the English flag is seen as being unclean, is county flags being dusted off and flown with pride and with that where I live they actually went out and had a flag designed, a flag which is all too common to see fluttering where the red cross once flew.
"Better the pride that resides
In a citizen of the world
Than the pride that divides
When a colourful rag is unfurled"

For the uninitiated, that's lyrics from a Rush song: Territories, from Power Windows

Nice quotage

Better people...better food...and better beer...

Flags and banners have never "done" anything..........

Flags and banners are a symbol of social cohesion that can be used in whatever way is needed, both good and bad. But of social cohesion, it seems our controllers want to have the ability to turn it on and off when it suits their purpose, rally around the flags when we want you to kill people to suit our political purpose, but when we want peace, rallying around flags is not on.

I always got the impression being English is not politically correct, as lets look at this, we don't celebrate our patron saint's day, our flag is linked to racist sentiments and unlike the other regions we don't have our own parliament.

West Minster is our parliment (for better or worse). It's just that we happened to invade everywhere else (again, for better or worse) so that it's also become the parliment of those regions as well. Personally I think that we're better off as a single, united entity than tiny, disparate countries - esp. on an international stage. It's all very well bouncing around with bells on your knees but people need proper government and job security and you don't get that by constantly sub-dividing and sub-diving until we end up with the ancient anglo-saxon kingdoms (Mercia, et. al) re-established. I would point out that there's nothing wrong with being proud of where you come from, or Morris dancing (even the scarey horse) and yes - celebrate it on St Georges day, why not. But in terms of national politics -bigger is better (IMO).

And yes, I am proud to be English and also enjoy a good giggle at the Morris dancing its just that's not all there is to life.

Whilst I'm not sure I buy into all your asserted values of flags / banners, I do recognise your point that politicians / authority often seem to want things both ways when it suits.

It's that whole cake / eat it thing - which never made any sense anyway. What's the point of having cake if you can't eat it.

Westminster, the way I see it, they are our enemy, because they are not us and we are not them. Long has it been if ever Westminister has represented us.
