I can rotate both end of my Hügi rear hub independently. Is that a specific Hügi feature or does that mean the axle is broken? :?

Or are broken axles a specific Hügi feature? :lol:

Hi Elev,

I broke a special "reinforced" Hügi in my Cannondale tandem once. It appears to have a "clutch" with "teeth" on two plates that engage when you apply power to your pedals and disengage, i.e. slip over each other in freewheel mode, that's why it's so noisy compared to a normal freewheel hub.

If you get a set of new "Zahnscheiben" from Hügi you are set. It's even possible to change the tooth-plates without tools, you just need some tissues to clean your hands afterwards :)

But the fact that it broke at all made me change my rear hub to a Rohloff 14-speed so I also got rid of all the other junk on my tandem like the front derailleur etc. 8)

Once you know the Rohloff you'll never look back. It's a bit pricey but in the long run it even saves you money. And changing gears is so much easier 8)

But on a single a Hügi should be fine. Perhaps they have "reinforced" tooth plates for tandems which fit your hub ...

Cheers from Eindhoven,

Jörg.

Does the axle extend all the way through both dropouts, or are there separate end caps? If you're just rotating one endcap relative to the other, there's no problem.

yeah, the end caps are just popped onto the axle ends and can be taken off easily. so no prob if just the ends can be rotated. pull them off and check if the axle itself is still fine.

Thank you all for your valuable comments.

I searched on the DT Swiss site also. Looks like the description of some model hubs could match with my old hubs. Other descriptions seem to differ to some extend from my hub, I think.

Happy there exist such thing as Retrobike than ...with plenty of people willing to help.

So I should be able to pull the end of the axle. Thought I pulled quite hard ...but probably not hard enough. I understand the concept now. Everything seems fine. Lets continue building.

@Jörg
Welcome on board :) Yes, I heard more raving stories on Rohloff hubs.
