Grafton Shifter Perch Reproduction - the more, the cheaper

Re: Grafton Shifter Perch Reproduction - the more, the cheap

I just emailed this thread to John G, we'll see what he has to say about it.

@ Martin:

Thanks for that! :D I hope you stressed that this project is not meant to be commercial (selling them with a profit on ebay as it is done with Ringle H20 repros) but just for private use, without profit but with a lot of energy. The reproductions will be marked as such. These perches will be used on builds on which the rest of the Graftons parts are original (in my case: cranks, brakes, brake levers).

Currently we are still waiting for John Grafton's ok.

One more pair and we will get a price of only 110 EUR. :D

It is not unlikely, that we will reach 25 pair and therefore only 102 EUR.

I talked to John about this and he has mixed feelings about it. I do not speak for him in any way, but I think he's still surprised at the popularity of his gear after all these years, pleasantly surprised I might add. I believe he's considering maybe starting up some limited reproduction of some of his components, but again is not sure about it. I urged him to respond here in person, but I'm not exactly sure how he feels about that.

Regardless would you really no go through with this if he really opposed to it??

He answered me as well.
If he tells me that he will reproduce the perches of course I won´t start anything, sure.
It´s all hobby for me and I´m not interested to get in trouble with this.

Have these actually got WW patents still intact on them? Knowing the patents industry as I do, it is not at all easy to get a patent on something only vaguely similar, that has already been made by another manufacturer.
Could you not just design your own style, but to achieve the same ends? (most of the clamp is not visible from above anyway) This would steer away from "the copy" scenario and simplify operations? Everyone happy then? :D
There's probably some "Inscrutable" chap already programming his CNC machine in some far Easterm machine shop as I write! Ready to unleash hundreds of 'em in multiple colours for about $5 a chuck

Re: Grafton Shifter Perch Reproduction - the more, the cheap

I just wanted to say thanks to some of the people that are involved in this (gibihm, Rahbari, Henrik) Most people would just go ahead and make repo's and not even bother to acknowledge the person responsible for all the effort that went into designing all this over 20 years ago. I was one of the first on the planet to come up with high end mountain bike components (because I loved the sport). Within 2 years anyone with a hammer and chisel were doing the same thing. I got used to being copied years ago. So thanks again for having the courtesy to ask me how I feel about this. By the way I have some parts left over.

Wow. Welcome John!

Always been a fan of your stuff and still am to this day. Functional but also pleasing on the eye.
