Do drivers know what they represent? Or do they just see an abandoned bike that needs removing? If the ghost bikes make drivers more aware and drive more carefully, they're doing a good job. They're a more powerful statement than yet more road signs telling drivers to be careful, slow down, etc.
I suspect most drivers don't know. As it happens the one I saw does also have the person's name alongside, so it's a bit more obvious. As it's been a thing in London for longer, maybe the awareness there is better.Do drivers know what they represent? Or do they just see an abandoned bike that needs removing?
What would be more striking is a large message within the frame saying something like "once ridden by John"
True: if they're just white bikes locked to lamp posts, the message isn't so clear. But many do have flowers and messages too.Do drivers know what they represent? Or do they just see an abandoned bike that needs removing?

Yes, just don’t ever go up the inside of a HGV, it’s a blind spot and they don’t feel a thing.I was unaware of this, thanks for posting Joe.
I'll keep my eyes open for them next time I'm in town.
HGVs took most of those listed it seems, that's a horrible thought![]()
