Ghost bikes…👻

Ah thanks. I remember the incident, but don't ride that way, my peaks approach is more Moscar, loxley, strines

If the ghost bikes make drivers more aware and drive more carefully, they're doing a good job. They're a more powerful statement than yet more road signs telling drivers to be careful, slow down, etc.
Do drivers know what they represent? Or do they just see an abandoned bike that needs removing?
What would be more striking is a large message within the frame saying something like "once ridden by John"

I suspect most drivers don't know. As it happens the one I saw does also have the person's name alongside, so it's a bit more obvious. As it's been a thing in London for longer, maybe the awareness there is better.

I think most London locals know what they are about now, a bit like the project article mentions.

I remember seeing my first and thinking it was someone’s flower arrangement ornament, then realising in the same moment or maybe when I saw another that it was something more than that. Many of them are now protected by the council and the likes.

these days I think they are only allowed to be up for so long, like a few months, then they get taken down or we would end up with hundreds and on every single left turn 🙈

I remember the bow roundabout accidents as it was on my regular commute at the time and it's a pretty treacherous roundabout - multiple lanes, fast moving traffic, lots of HGVs.

True: if they're just white bikes locked to lamp posts, the message isn't so clear. But many do have flowers and messages too.

They've been covered a few times in local/regional media as well as attracted the support of people like David Cameron. Likely most who live in London will at least know someone who knows what they are about.

I was unaware of this, thanks for posting Joe.
I'll keep my eyes open for them next time I'm in town.
HGVs took most of those listed it seems, that's a horrible thought 😥

Yes, just don’t ever go up the inside of a HGV, it’s a blind spot and they don’t feel a thing.
