Garage break in

Here's hoping the new security will do the trick. My OH has sworn by carpet gripper for years!

My garage was reasonabley secure or so I thought, hefty mortice lock, hasp and staple lock plus the hinges had coach bolts through to stop them being unscrewed. It obviously wasn't enough, the thieves have highlighted the weaknesses and I've improved things.

Some good tips on here and I work at just the place to fabricate some heavy security measures, time for the welding department to pay me back for all the foreigners I do for them :) .

Cyfa, the garage is about 2 yards from the side of the house, the shed at the bottom of my garden is one of those tin-opener-friendly steel ones from Argos, I'd never put anything of value in it.

Just to add, I did call the police straight away who called me back to say they wouldn't be coming out. They took a report over the phone and I'm going to be getting a crime number through the post. Not really sure why I bothered.

Not really knocking the police, there was nothing for them to do here, it just felt like the right thing to do to report it. It was a pointless exercise for both of us really.

I did get lucky, I'm fairly convinced I was the one that disturbed them. I came down for a drink of milk around midnight after being woken up by my youngest daughter.

I'll never know the exact details of what went on last night, it really makes very little sense.

Last week there were 7 garages broken into just up the road from where I live. I had the number plates stolen from my car the week before - used to steal fuel the following day. I would like to think my garage is secure but there is always doubt in your mind when you hear an odd noise. The front garage door is an up-and-over type, not really secure, can be opened with a screwdriver if you wanted to. I have bolted a padlock hasp to the floor and then bolted that to the door itself. The second line of defence is to screw a metal plate above the catch so it cannot be opened from the outside. Then there is a steel bar across the back of the door attached to either wall. Then a roofbox suspended from the roof stopping the door being opened. The garage has a rear door which has two locks which are both reinforced inside. A PIR security light covers the area 5m either side of the door. Stealthier protection includes a windchime which is attached via a cord to a hook on the inside of the door - you have to unhook it before opening. All this is backed up by a baby monitor which is permanently plugged in and monitored from the bedroom. The determined thief could get in but they would have to make alot of noise doing so. Paranoid, moi?

@REKIBorter
I had my number plates stolen a while ago too (front one is already coming away, any idea of a strong adhesion method other than the sticky pads at Halfords?) but I never had any comeback from it. No speeding tickets, congestion charge, fuel thefts, nothing.

I have been followed a few times by the police but have never been pulled over though. I wouldnt mind being pulled over as it goes, it would at least make me feel like the police are actually looking out for my plates!!

drilling a pilot and self tapping screws isn't completely out of the question (poly tops screws are better - think you can get them colour coded for front and rear plates). just make sure that whats behind your number plate can be drilled and there isn't anything close behind that you don't want to puncture! :) - i used to fit number plates at Halfrauds. had to relocate a couple of holes once.
careful drilling the #plate too, best to put a bit of masking or sellotape where you drill to avoid cracking/slipping :)

Rekiborter - i like the baby monitor set up! :) you know you can get them with cameras now right? :P

EDIT: these can also be accessed via internet using a specific URL or IP address i think! so even when you are away for the night, you can keep and eye on your babies!

Cheers for the advice, twain! Not sure I want to be drilling the bumper to be honest, knowing me it will split or I will drill through something important :roll:

All I know is the original sticky strip they used from the factory (Renault) was an absolute nightmare to remove the remaining residue of! Might just get some of that for ease.
