Walk on it? How do you think we get the ice fishing huts out to the middle of the lake?

6" is thick enough to support vehicles. cutting a hole with an auger and measuring with a stick/tape measure is the proper method. Guessing is quick+easy, but has it's disadvantages.

Then again, we race sleds in open water, so our idea of "acceptable risk" is somewhat skewed.
