I grew tired of firewalls, antivirus, anti spyware, scans, reboots, reinstalls, trawling through the registry etc etc and after years of dipping my toes into Linux I took the plunge to Ubuntu a couple of years ago, I'll probably never go back to windows now.

AVG is a machine killer in terms of performance so leave that well alone.

Use MS Security Essentials and leave the default Windows firewall on, along with whatever the browser IE9/FF offers in terms of link screening/filtering.

Nothing is ever getting in passed your router in 99% of home setups, what you need to worry about is what is going out and that is usually self inflicted. Almost all of these products are just making your life hard trying to stop you running something you really should not.

If it looks iffy, don't click it, best advice
