The built in Windows firewall is fine for most purposes, especially if you are using a NAT router of some kind in between you and the Internet.

Most of the more "sophisticated" firewalls end up asking the user questions that render them useless anyway as end users tend not to know the correct course of action to take and permit things they should disallow and vice versa.

Yes, the home hub acts as another firewall in front of your PC. You will also probably find that zone alarm slows down your PC by an appreciable amount... exactly how much obviously depends on how much "horsepower" you have spare.

Well worth learning how to set up your router.

Not complex really, once you do a little reading.

Comodo, Comodo, Comodo for a neat free software solution for all ills.

I've settled on Microsoft Security Essentials -- fairly basic, but doesn't slow everything to a crawl. Some firewall and AV packages are worse than actually having a virus.

AVG
Recommended to me by a good mate[doing a PHD] who in turn was recommended to him by the professor of internet security at Glasgow university.

I've been using it instead of the paid talk talk[F-secure]security for the last 6 months and its been great.
Saving me about £50 a year
