Fixed off roading anyone?

Retrobike Rider
Apart from Cab and Aidan in Bristol are there any other fools that do this?

I've just added my "new" fixed wheel to my trusty On One, removed the rear brake and I'm ready for the weekend.

Question is gearing, I'm starting 32 X 15? Too low? I have to ride a few miles on the road to get to the mud of Ashton Court and Leigh Woods then it's a bit hilly and slippy Singletrack.............

There was a guy called Kris who was riding a fixed wheel Voodoo on last Saturday's Retrobike Peaks ride.

He's not currently a member of the forum but was invited along by someone else.
He was riding the mudslide descents that had many of us off crashing and/or walking.

Apparently he also does solo 24 hour events on his fixie too.

Steve,

What gear do you ride. I'm definately having a front brake..........

Cheers

I used to ride track, hill climbs and TT's on a fixed wheel. In fact, I almost did every TT on my fixed wheel regardless of the course and weather!

But off road, I dont get it?

How?

I'm intrigued about how you land even the smallest jumps...you would have to get your feet spinning exactly the right speed to avoid being pitched off... :?

To be honest, I was never that talented to run offroad fixed!

An inflatable Sumo suit may have helped my confidence. :D

Big respect to all you fixed fans though. 8)

al, Men don't ride bicycles,do they!

Flash,

I'm currently running 32/20...pretty low, but still enough to get rolling fast enough for a bit of drama

I run platforms and no straps, so I have some flexibilty if the going gets tough.

It's really not that difficult once you get used to picking lines that avoid pedal hits and going more flow than hammer. I'm not all that fast to begin with, so it's more fun than you'd think plunking around the trails. Haven't hit any big jumps, but have popped a few logs, and so far no issues with landing, (hope I didn't just jinx myself :) ).

I'd say to anyone thinking of giving it a spin...go with an Eno flip flop rear hub, that way if you change your mind about fixed, you can always run it s/s with a freewheel.

Enjoy.

Steve
