Expensive 1994 Explosif

Interesting that this made its BIN of £449, as I wouldn't value it at more than £300. I think it shows the value of a clever presentation.

It seems as though the frame is in exceptional condition, and that is a huge help - it's worth £150, may well be more. But what else have we got here?

"This is as close as it comes to buying a brand new one back in 1994" gives the impression that everything is original. So why then the 1995 Cinder Cone-level stem, post, saddle and bars? What happened to the ti bar, the nice O-Beam post and the genuinely light 1994 saddle with ti rails? Why the non-original black seat clamp and cable guide? Why the "mixture of Shimano XT/DX components" when there was no DX on a 94 Explosif? What is the condition of the parts? What wheels has it got? What Conti tyres will be substituted for the valuable ones that are shown in the picture to make the bike look better than it is?

Super frame, but I don't think much of the rest of it. £449 is the highest price I've seen for a retro Explosif for a long while, maybe ever, but this isn't the best example and I've seen better ones fetch a whole lot less.

Looks like the black NOS LX cantilevers have made it onto it too, rather than the admittedly rubbish Race Light ones.

Shame about the Ti bits being robbed from it, those are what made the Explosive hold its stature in that years range.

Well spotted on the other bits, that stem, post and forks feature on my 95 Fire Mountain.

Not saying there was shill bidding here, but if you were going to do it, this isn’t a bad way of going about it.

1. item that looks nicer than it is – well everybody likes those biscuit tyres with a green frame, but they’re not for sale
2. set a high BIN and a high reserve
3. am I right in thinking that the BIN still works even after bids have been made, provided the reserve isn’t reached?
4. put in some highish bids early on, within the reserve so BIN still available
5. the price was well over £300 on its second day, which seems quite unusual
6. anyone considering the BIN might have thought that at over £300 on day 2 it was bound to go over the BIN
7. so maybe anyone considering the BIN might have been panicked into clicking the box
8. private listing too, does that make checking bids more difficult?

Maybe just my unworthy suspicious mind!

haha i might try that one!

Its quite expensive but there's always going to be people who are willing to pay over the odds for a very very good condition frame.

If it had been 18" I would have hit the BIN as soon as I saw it  I agree it was one of the cleverer ebay sales and if it had been 18" I would have been a little dissappointed once I'd sat down and realised what was missing :?

But I mostly buy for the frame anyway, I can tolerate duff parts but you've got to at least start with a tidy looking frame
