I normally wouldn't use bar ends but they're useful for long road stretches. On the way back from a long ride along a canal one day I designed in my head some bar ends that folded away inside the bar. You'd pull them out then fold em forward using a pinned joint. Wouldn't stand up to honking up a hill very well but would offer an alternative hand position on the flat.
Never took it any further though.
