On some thing I am interested in, there was a large bid then and instant retraction. It's a German ebayer (I think) and it seems it common from a search on the reason left
Falscher Gebotsbetrag eingegeben

Now I can categorically say this was to find the reserve price ?

What can be done about this ebayer?, this is his bid status..
Bid retractions: 6
Bid retractions (6 months): 123

Problem is you cannot see who it really is ?

Strictly speaking it's not within the rules. THere are only a couple of situations where you can withdraw bids; entering the wrong amount, someone bidding on your behalf, or being unable to contact the bidder.
With over a hundred bid retractions, this "buyer" is clearly bending the rules somewhat. Question is, if informed of this, would Ebay care?

Well I found it is against ebay rules, certainly on mass and any bid retractions should have the correct bid place straight after so £30/300 in this case as any number not similar would not be a typo.

They also have a place to report such actions

I find the whole secret reserve thing a little silly. I have been put off bidding on things in the past that I didn't need but quite fancied as it had reserve not met written under it.

If you set a reserve, why not tell people what it is and avoid wasting everyones time?

All a hidden reserve does for me is stops me casually bidding.

The bid retractor is special-81 btw

The reserve is just as in standard everyday turn up and bid in a hall auctions though isn't it ?

But I do understand if they put a min. bid price to start from, then people might not bid, but if people bid under the reserve price an offer can be made to the highest bidder ?

Having never sold anything on ebay, I'm not sure how it actually works.

Had a similar experience this week trying to sell my Raven on there guy placed a bid near auction start & never contacted or responded to me all week, other bidder was put off as he was outbid by first guy.

First guy finally contacts me the morning before auction end asks where am i to view then tells me he has another bike to look at in London (on his doorstep ) so asks me to cancel his bid.

Got back to second guy who said he'd found something else as he thought it was out of his budget.

Apart from finding out the auction reserve, they can see the current high bidders maximum bid if they bid a very high price, retract the bid, and then stroll in the last minute with a bid slightly higher to win.
I agree about reserve prices, if I have one then I will always state what it is in the listing.
