Dynatech Odyssey

Retro Newbie
Hi all, just joined up and have a couple of questions about what to do with my Dynatech that's been languishing in my garage for the last 14 years.

Still all original XT kit, has Compag Thorr rims - were they oe? Can't remember back to '91 when I bought it!

Thinking of getting it back on (off!) the road, needs new tyres as they look rather perished and a new seat too as the gel has long gone! Ouch!

Everything else seems in good order, brakes stop and gears shift well.

If I wanted some susp forks on it, what would you recommend?
How about a front disk kit?

Is it worth it or should I get a new bike ?
What would the cost of an equiv bike be these days?

Cheers!

Hi, as the site is called "Retrobike" I'd have to say that you should tidy the bike up and get riding it again :D
Your frame will be of the pre or very early suspension era, so you may have a problem with fitting more modern forks, they will raise the front end of the bike up a bit too much. You may do better searching out some suspension forks from around the same period as your bike, they are usually short travel XC forks though.
I've no idea about discs, but only the more modern forks will come with the disc tab on the fork legs to allow you to fit the caliper.

I'd suggest you get it running and go out and ride it, see how it feels (probably pretty strange if you're used to modern up to date mountainbikes!), then decide what things you'd like to change.

Enjoy! :D :D :D

Rock Shox Mag21's were fitted to the Dynatech range so the frame can probably accept a set fo short travel forks without messing the geometry up. As for a front disc, don't do it the forks needed to accept a front disc will be too long and mess up the geometry and it will just look wrong.

Carl.

As above, if it's all more or less original then keep it as it is. Replacing the tyres and saddle sound like a good idea, and it would probably be worth replacing the brake pads as 20 year old pads tend to dry out and inhibit braking performance somewhat.

Other than that, an original early 90's Dyna Tech will be a great bike to ride as it is.

Like many members on here, you could always look at getting a more modern bike to ride as well though.
