After joining this wonderful site last month, I started enjoying the several pages on Dyna Techs as a bed time read. I remembered I had promised my self a cheeky ownership of an M Trax or Dyna if one happened to pass my way, this was about this time last year.
With a bit of spare in the old back pocket, it was time to scan the bay!!
I decided on this trusty steed on the picture below , if only because it looked like the malnourished mongrel at the local RSPCA.
A trip to the its birthplace in Nottingham for the pick up (and take the wifey shopping
) the bike was truly in a poor state of affairs. In fact the owner was so embarrassed he would have been happy for me to say, " sorry mate, that's not for me"
But you just know when a bike needs saving from the dump. With a well knackered head set rattling like the proverbial tin of mabs, buckled back wheel, with spokes missing. The deore lx rapid shifters smashed to smithers and odd pedals, I couldn't wait to get my teeth into sorting it out.
3 weeks in to the deal and about 4/5 evenings spent with the light nights fading fast, I've finally got the Dyna into a state where we can enjoy a bit of quality on the trails. I'm not into long rebuilds, I like to get them in to a state where they can be ridden and I'm still learning my mechanic-ing skills as I go.
A head set strip down and rebuild with new bits and grease seemed to do the trick. My parts bin is not that yet extensive, so I've robbed the wheels off of my GT. Having said that, the back wheel is repaired, I just need to learn from you-tube how to balance the spokes and true it. But I had great fun stripping the block off and giving it a clean Friday night.
Cage pedals with some SPD inserts came from the Raleigh Banana Replica I purchased in the summer.
The handlebars, grip shift and rear mech have come from my lads cast off Decathlon. That probably wont sit well with the purists amongst you, but this Dyna needed to get back out there!!
I had trouble getting the grip shift working with the deore lx mech, so I just replaced it short term, till I have time to figure it out.
The original bars will go back on, as soon as I have located some replacement shifters or the bits to rebuild the scrap I took off the bike.
New cables, new seat and a bit of touch up with a can of Honda Night Fire Black, that I had kicking around the garden shed, seem to have worked wonders.
The top tube is a bit mashed, so if some of you can point me in the direction of those stickers I have seen on here that would be ace. As well as one of those rubber gromits that will fit in the head set.
Well hope you enjoy looking at the pictures. My spare time is limited, but messing with bikes is very therapeutic and riding them is even better.
Raleigh bikes, do they ever die?
