Double U Brake Saracen Trekker 1989

Re:

So took the trekker out today with amedias and his mate. Quick loop of red some off piste bits. Really good laugh as always

Hi Ade, hope you are well? I'm about to rejoin the UU club again with another added to the collection!

Do you remember a while ago you pointed me in the direction of a trekker comp frame in black with no forks? It turned out to be one that i had sold a while before but since I now had some extra spare parts (and the interim owner had removed the stuck seat post) I decided to buy it back. I had intended to put it together with some standard forks with cantis like my trekker XT but basically I never got round to it!

Well, amazingly a pair of U brake forks from a black trekker comp have turned up for 99p! So it might get put together after all as a fully original spec bike! I just need one more U brake but I have pretty much everything else I need from the dawes that was covered in paint, pretty much a whole dx groupset waiting to go on it. Ideally I need a black seat post aswell but silver will do for now. (I also got an original saddle with the forks, sorry to anyone bidding for that!)

With your bike you what happened to the colour matched bottle holder? And also have you put different brake levers on it? The orginals should be black? I have some black ones I can find of another bike.

I'll get some pictures up, I'm thinking of not respraying, just keeping it with the battered patina but will wait for the forks to arrive in the post before I decide. The groupset i have is such good condition that it might look odd with the battered frame, we'll see.

Re:

Morning Rupe all good thanks.

I have the colour coded bottle cage but it was always so bent you struggled to use it and its semi sheared off so if I bent it back it would snap so hence I've this other one. I bought another for my e stay as I knew it would be repainted and would match.

I have a spare u brake. I tried repainting the booster as it was quite rusty but wasn't a great job so I used another I had. Welcome to it if you want - pm me your address if you do.

The levers were originally black but when stripped down the scratches were so many and deep decided to strip them. It was my intention to get them powdercoated but again never got around to it. Intend to one day though.

This promises to be great. Quite jealous!

You still got the other three Saracens? I'm trying to finish the kili at christmas ready for as ride in Jan.

Re:

Hi, ah I see. LUckily this frame of mine did originally come with a blue bottle holder which I still have. The rest of the bike was junk and I didnt get any photos. The only thing I kept and used of it was XT thumbies and even they were rough.

Anyway, so do you think I should keep the frame as it is? Theres enough decals to identify it and its got character!

A U brake would be great, especially if it has the booster bar. I'm thinking of what I have spare that might help your kili? I have a pair of LX mechs that are probably the exact period correct ones, Kilis were LX wernt they?

Happy to swap them for a U brake.

I still have my yellow tufftrax and the Kili, and the two trekkers. I sold the dawes frame (hence now having a dx groupset spare) and I recently sold my cannondale to pay for a carbon frame for my modern bike.

Also, I no longer have the black tufftrax, I stripped it and sold some bits but before I could sell the frame someone must have come into my back garden and taken it! I didnt notice for a while but one day I realised it was not there! Anyway, I have the saracen stem and bars from that which will now be useful.

The only thing not right is that I have silver cranks and a silver seat post but I think everything else will be correct so I can live with that. If I dont see you before we'll have to have a UU meet at Mayhem this year!

Yeah I will try and organise a ride nearer your neck of the woods next year before mayhem. Get gravymonster out on his UU as well.

Send me a PM with your address and I will post you the U Brake. All sorted for the kili I think, just needs putting together. Stalled as I was trying to service some maguras but after bleeding them they still dont want to do anything so going to put them to one side for now.

Shame someone nicked your tufftrax!

Paint looks ok on this. Mine isn't that good close up. I went over it in vinegar to get the light surface rust off and touched up a few places after stripping to bare metal in others, and glad I did that as it looks better than a respray I think. Problem with new paint is its never the same as the original, those decals are cool, and you get a bit precious about using it in this weather! That's what I'm thinking when the kili is rebuilt!

Silver cranks are fine. As I've used my trekker a fair bit this summer the anodising is wearing quickly on both the rims and the cranks, would probably look better in silver now to be honest, although when mint the black is super cool 8)

I have a slightly newer saracen saddle if you want? Black and grey type, quite a few of them around and not quite original for you but its spare.

UPDATE 22 Jan 2015:

After toying with another 29er winter bike, thought I would just really use the trekker, so its been out more than any of my other bikes as I am not too precious about it. That’s good, because the weather here has been awful and now its slightly warmer again, there is just a lot of mud.

This has taken the toll a bit on the bike, I forget how mint it was when I picked it up a few years back. Now has some serious foot rub and anodising is wearing on the rims quickly. Neither of which I mind, I don’t have room in the garage for bikes that aren’t getting used.

Fancy a drink?

Next up - some new tyres (non retro)
