dont ride with your headphones on!

I stream music to BT headphones on my sportbike every ride, and my rides are always hammer and tong, 200kmh, every-man-for-himself-if-the-cops-show affairs on the low volume twisty bits outside of town with a couple of trusted friends. They are noise cancelling headphones, so I actually hear more with the music at a reasonable level than I would without hearing protection (Arai helmets are notoriously noisy at speed).

Anyone who thinks they should be ok riding around with headphones on in mixed traffic should have their bikes taken from them.

End of.

totally agree
and as for going for it so hard as to not look where he is going is just as stupid!!!
what if it was a child he hit?????

sorry to say he sounds like a bit of a tool

So at the age of 17, you were perfect out on your bike?

children dont normally play on busy roads.

Headphones, lack of concentration, whatever, it was still a nasty accident that could happen to anybody.

Well actually I was pretty much a perfect rider of bikes, pedal and motor, by the time I got to 17. I took it very seriously, undertook the Cycle Proficiency years before and paid careful attention to all aspects of road safety. I certainly would not have made such a rookie error.

What the furry dice that has to do with it I have no idea...

What your colleague did was nothing to do with being 17, but everything to do with being daft.

As an experienced rider/driver, you know that where there are parked cars there are pedestrians, whether children or not. What the hell was he thinking taking his eyes off a 'busy road'? He could indeed have killed someone.

Could 'happen to anybody'; in as much as 'anybody' can swing a plank around and hit their work mate with it.

If the circumstances are as described, he very much made the accident happen, through a combination of reckless riding and ignorance.

i ride with my headphones in but have music at a reeasonable volume, just so its not all traffic

while i can see the possibility of bad stuff happening, sometimes on a particularly hard to judge bit of road, i will take an earphone out.
just to be sure
that said, i do have pretty good observational skills and a good judge of whats going to happen next (i always expect the worst from a driver ancd hence over compensate in my riding)

BUT cars are getting quieter :?

hope your mate gets better - anton

basicly the same as me, i've been riding bikes and listening to music since i was about 14 and have not even had a close call let alone an accident.

also with cars engines getting quieter & quieter these days you don't always hear cars coming.

This is very similar to the cliche about the ninety year old grandfather who has been smoking his whole life.

Do you think you have been free of that close call all these years because you are lucky or because wearing headphones does not make riding on the road more dangerous?

no i think i've not had any close calls because i find wearing the headphones makes me more aware of my surroundings. your ears can deceive you, your eyes on the other hand don't (except for those magic eye things).

i'm not saying that i'm the perfect cyclist but i must be doing something right despite wearing headphones whenever i cycle.
