Does anyone make a 1,1/8 ahead stem quil adapter for 1,1/4&q

Just wondering if anyone makes a quil adapter to fit 1,1/8" ahead stem to 1,1'4" threaded headset/steerer?

eg a section of alloy quil that fits a 1.25" headset/steerer tube one end and a 1.125" ahead stem up-top?

Interested as I might have an application for just this.

Ignore that, I thought you wanted to use a 1 1/4" ahead stem on a 1 1/8" ahead steerer...

..you'll probably have to botch a mess of shims ie a 1 1/8" to 1 1/4" quill shim and a threaded to threadless converter all a bit messy and far too many shims for my liking!

True - nice ideas though / food for thought.

Would be good if someone made a quil / adapter to slot 1,1/8" ahead stem at top and 1,1/4" quil for threaded headsets - sort of thing I could get my engineering friend to knock-up on his lathe. I'm sure there's a (small) market for these

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but here goes my train of thought ...

The quoted diameter of the steerer is the external diameter, and the internal diameter of a given steerer is normally 1/8" smaller. So, for your 1 1/4" steerer, the section into which you'd insert any adapter is 1 1/8" diameter. Thus to convert your 1 1/4" threaded steerer to work with a 1 1/8" ahead stem, you actually need a uniform cross section 1 1/8" extension with a quill or wedge expander to secure it inside the steerer. That might not be too difficult for an engineer with a lathe to make for you.

Alternatively, I mistakenly bought off ebay a 1 1/8" threaded -> threadless adapter, to use a 1 1/8" ahead stem with a 1 1/8" threaded steerer. This is essentially a straight-section 1" quill with a stack of tight-fitting shims at the top, in all about 15cm long. If you had a shim to insert inside the steerer to reduce from 1 1/8" -> 1" internal, then you could use one of these. A 28.6mm -> 25.4mm seatpost shim would work as long as it was long enough to cover the full quill. Incidentally, there's no issue with using shims with these steerer adapters, and most of them come supplied with shims for both the stem and steerer - like here:

If this is a viable solution for you then you could have the one I bought as it's no good to me. It's in storage though and may be a while til I can dig it out. It's also fairly heavy.

Cheers, Gareth.
