DIY bike stand

I'll get some pics of the home made one in our workshop ,im in on thursday and ill put them up in the eve'.
I must say it looks kind of flimsy :? ,ill clamp a bike in it an see if its strong enough for general strip down kind of work, gears etc.

Have you tried a gas fitter? i think they use 3/4" steel pipe,.
No doubt jewsons or travis perkins will have them, have a good look those builder merchants .B&Q,they stock damn near everything these days, you might find something you can adapt, maybe a lighting tripod or other pre-fabricater box section folding frame.

If its going to be somewhere it isnt moved much then scaffold is good as its very strong, but its also very heavy,3/4" will be far lighter but im not sure its strong enough.

If do decide to use scaffolding, just look for building works and 'borrow' one or two lengths.
LGF can offer insights on using a grinder to cut it

ok so anyone know where to get 3/4" pipe pref. steel ? i doubt plumbers would do it?

Try yellow pages/thomsons, look for small local engineering shops. They may even help you with a few bends/welds if your nice. May somewhere does small fabrication. Also 3/4 is the minimum I'd go, 1" would be nicer.

@dyna-ti thanks for the nice long reply! il try travis perkins and the like, scaffolding would of been nice but i cant buy it off the net due to weight, so unless i magically spot some i might be out of luck :( however my late grandad did have a bit of scaffolding but the house is down in kent =/ and im not sure if my grandma has chucked it out! that would be a shame!

@kaiser - i was trying to use 3/4" due to the pipe clamp i am going to use (it need 3/4" threaded pipe to clamp on to) perhaps i could make the vertical stanchion (or whatever it is) out of 1" or so and then have a elbow and then more 1" and then at the end reduce to 3/4" for the clamp?

Heres some pics
Sorry for the focus but these digital cameras are poo and unless i use a tripod always show shake
But no doubt you can make out how the mole grips work
they are welded to a tube and that goes inside a slightly bigger tube to allow you to turn the frame about[a couple of bolts with bars welded on act as stops]

Hmmm does look quite good! i do really like the clamp method! still looking for scaffolding though ideally at the moment! plus hopefully it will be cheaper and more supportive!

Not too sure :?
It might be from park
Cost a bloody fortune anyhow
It belongs to the project, they've got 3 i think they were donated :?

Next time im there ,i look to see a makers mark
I must say ,without a stand ,maintenance would be a nightmare
