DIY bike stand

EDIT didnt get the post above while i wrote this rendering this post un needed. . .
anyway thanks for the constructive input :D

i dont like using them . i like to sit down while i work

a mate got one for his garage years ago . got pissed off when i never used it

" go on , put it in the stand "

 all im doing is adjusting the rear wheel , im better off on the floor where i can exert force into the immovable floor instead of having to hold the bike still with one hand and spanner with the other . i can also lean back in the seat and carry on drinking tea

i was always tripping over the feet of the one i had in the shop . thats something to consider . it couldnt take the sheer weight of the electrickery bikes either , kept tipping forward even when the clamp had been lowered so the rear wheel was just off the floor . i shouldave got a 2 post lift

the tool tray on the post was also more trouble than it was worth . i was always on the wrong side of it and id always lose tools , spend ages looking for them before remembering the stand had them . back pockets are more useful

Haha! i agree with you on some parts - maybe i wont have a tool tray - i always end up loasing tools on the floor  and it would be handy to have somewhere to put all the bolts etc its more for restoring older bikes. . . its such a pain having them on the floor . . . getting mudguards and brakes off etc always getting a sore back . . .

How do you then adjust the gears with you sitting down and i imagine the wheels on the ground? :?
I agree tool trays are useless, they just get filled up with tools you arent using at that time

Real mechanics dont sit on their bum when working

the shop was very confined so the table wasnt more than a step away to put parts and bits on . the tray was an easily forgettable black hole

if your going with dynas method for the clamp its worth paying a bit more and getting some that have a ratcheting action . an old mate is a panel beater and he was showing me some ( the type in the pics are for sheet metal ) that lack the adjuster knob and you just keep clamping until it gets tight , actually i think there was a small adjuster to set clamping tension . far more convenient and one of those things you use for the first time and just say " thats brilliant " like ratchet spanners " oh my god , i dont need to take the spanner off and move it anymore "

edit . gears ! you have me mistaken for someone else  its easy to hold the rear of the bike up and with the other hand shift - pedal - check - shift - pedal - check , make any slight adjustments needed and pedal - check

you can also elevate the rear of a bike by leaning the seatpost against a table or bench and pushing the bars . the rear wheel lifts up and there is enough room to turn the cranks

Cool - havent seen ratchet mole grips 0.o will have to have a look! thanks :)

edit - any chance you could post a URL or something of some as i cant seem to find any!?

All good workstands must have a cup holder for that essential mug of tea while fettling.

just rung up the scaffolding company - its going to cost £38 to send my order - basically doubling the final price -.- i think im going to have to cancel it and then get some pipe in town
