DH3 damper settings?

How do the damper settings work on a '96 era Marzocchi DH3 fork work? I've wondered for years, and it doesn't mention anything about them in the manual! You can adjust them from '1' to '6' by turning the knob (insert schoolboy snigger here) clockwise or anticlockwise near the base of each fork leg, but i've never felt any difference in damping TBH in 14 years of ownership, even after a much needed rebuild last year.

Does anyone know? Cheers.

I do not know these forks, all I've ever done with them is the handlebar boing test

So
Looking at the exploded diagram, it seems to rotate some holes to another side. Which I assume oil must flow through and cause the damping response to alter
I cannot see how it does that as it seems to be at the bottom of the forks insides.

So there you go. Someone must have looked inside and seen how the oil flows.

There was a handy little trick with these back in the day, if you want better small bump sensitivity you can drill a 1mm hole at the base of part 53 which speeds up the oil flow and makes the initial bit of travel a little more supple.
.....Then again I dont remember that much from 16 years ago and im wondering now if I drilled a 1mm hole in my girlfriends steam iron and never opened a pair of these at all.

Cheers for the info guys, I guess it doesn't matter too much as they are a 15 year old design and I run them with reduced travel (crown bolted on 1/3 of the way down the stanchions) so my '95 Kilauea doesnt feel like a Chopper...

the '95 Kilauea will handle much longer forks,
get a touch shorter stem if it feels like a chopper.
Same frames run 60, 80 and 100mm forks easily.
