Bike shop just called , they can't get either bottom bracket out of he two frames I gave them.

1992 Marin Team Issue with Royce BB
1992 GT Avalanche

They've had them round to the machine shop round the corner who they usually use to get seized BB's out and they can't shift them either.

:( thoroughly peed off right now.

I've got all the bits to assemble complete bikes sitting in the garage.

Not sure what to do , anyone local fancy a challenge in exchange for beer vouchers / actual cases of beer ?

H :(

Re:

No , didn't know he sold them :)

I'll check with the bike shop that they used the correct tool , I assume they would have one ?

Then I'll send him a PM

Thanks

Ps any tips on the other one lol

Re:

Just seen his tool ( fnaar fnaar ) , that is impressive !

Worth having to keep in the garage at that price !

Hope there's some left

Re:

Part of me wonders if the bike shop aren't being 'forceful' enough through fear of damaging the frame. Which is fair enough I guess , but it's shit or bust now , frame is scrap if it won't come out.

They said they couldn't get the headset on the GT out , but I managed it with a giant pair of stilsons , a 5 ft scaffold pole and a blowlamp. Didn't damage the paintwork either which was a bonus , which is one of the reasons I don't want to put heat on the BB as the paint will die and the avalanche paint is difficult to replicate.

I was expecting a challenge with these , but not this bad. One seized BB I can stand , but two on two frames ?

I think he avalanche BB is original ( shimano deore ? ) , it has plastic on one side ? Will the magic tool fit this one too ?

Re:

Thanks for the recommendation.
The six pin interface for bottom brackets was a poor idea. From rough calculations the area of the pins is equivalent to a 6mm Allan key. It's fine for fitting in a good condition frame, but it doesn't really work for removing seized ones, there is a reason Shimano used such an interface with such a large area (cartridge splines).

They may remove your stuck one, or it might break the pins. I sell them to make fitting and removing easier and to prevent damage when using a pin spanner, I don't recommend for using on stuck ones. Although several people have freed stuck ones with them.

I may have a prototype tool here somewhere, but it won't be perfect. From memory I tested them to 69lb/ft. But a couple of people have broken them. I have been planning on making some more with slightly larger pins, but this has been a plan for several months and it'll probably be several more months before I get round to it.

Re:

Hi

Thanks for the reply , I'll try anything to be honest :)

If you are happy to sell me the prototype ? I don't care if it's not pretty :)

As the frame with the Royce BB is going to be powdercoated , I could give the shell some heat before trying with the tool ? Might help.

Please let me know

Many thanks

H :)
