My mother moved to the UK from Sweden in the sixties, and had the audacity to work continuously whilst never claiming state benefits, meanwhile paying taxes, finding a husband from Yorkshire, starting a family and having three children.
After contributing to the economy and her local community, whilst keeping out of prison and away from the law, never standing in doorways whilst drinking and swearing at the natives using abhorrent and intimidating Scandinavian expletives, she thankfully retained her Swedish passport and moved back to Sweden a few years ago.
As the product of an immigrant I obviously feel like I don't belong here either, even though I was born here.
Seriously though, the UK has a long history of migrants from other countries over a couple of thousand years, from the Angles and the Vikings, to more recent influxes from the West Indies and the EU.
Our identity as a nation is based on this incredible variation in cultural influences. To deny that is very narrow minded and ignorant.
To blame 'others' for a nations problems is very unhelpful and intolerant.
As a footnote to this post, although there is an off-topic section on Retrobike, I don't necessarily agree with some people's belief that 'anything goes' on here.
This is a forum with members from all over the world, and it's about old bikes.
Perhaps a little more consideration of this should be taken into account before such divisive and potentially volatile threads are started.
There are plenty of other forums available which primarily discuss politics, world affairs and wheelie bins...
