Dawes Ranger rehabilitated

Agh, the old Dawes Ranger. It was my first mountain bike, bought for me by my father in 1985. Yes, it was long and slack, but I toured Europe on in when I was 16 and covered about 1500 miles in 6 weeks. My father and myself visited 8 countries and was a life defining time for me that cemented my love of cycling. Great machine and super comfortable when churning out miles and miles per day.

i remember having a go on a really long wheelbase mtb many moons ago. It was british and may well have been a Ranger. It was absolutely brilliant for riding down gravelly/grass/dirt hills and a real blast around big open corners with your foot down. It made me smile and feel like a dirt track god!

Getting it to stop enjoying itself and around tight and twisty tracks, though, was ....erm....how shall i put this politely....it was challenging.

My 87 Fat has a similar personality type, helped by the fact it's a size too big, less free spirited and more controllable in technical sections, it does love fast sweeping corners on loose surfaces more than any of my other bikes.

Rangers are on another level though, always got an eye open for one of these at the right price, I know exactly the ride for it.
