The big buff...all of it...shinier than a shining shiny thing from shinysville!
Peddles..
Toggle chain coupler....tricky little thing...can see why sturmey archer have stuck with the same thing for donkeys years...it works...but! ...I want something neater
So cos I'm not in the mood for making a shifter.....my sheds too hot....the winds blowing from the south east...it's Friday....and and I don't like purple....so there's enough reasons to no make the shifter right!?

An early start with the sparra's fart....
And a bit more this afternoon.....
And we have one job off the list
We have peddles.....
So this morning strip the paint off the cages...what a chore
Beat em around a bit and back in to shape they are! Wet flat and a polish and looking shiny shin vicious
This afternoon some reprofiling of the bodies a polish and a buff then retapped the threads for some nicer stainless countersunk bolts,
new bearings and they're spinning like a top
But no dust caps!!!!
Not a problem ...so I got Mr Winfield the lathe out of retirement and got him to rattle some little aluminium push fit caps out...he's a good old boy turned out lovely...
And popped em where they belonged...

A no holds barred gear shifter..
With the lovely touch...
It's happening...you non believers!
Still a long way to go....
But...
Cable track/groove and nipple housing done...
Slight cam action to reduce throw...
A bearing and a spring awaits....clicky clicky very tricky
that bits going to be fun....
Because it's hot and I'm not bothered too much ...
Let's deal with the ergonomics first.....
Thumb action and index finger action....small petite light and hopefully as unseen as possible under the bar....well that's the idea anyway!
Think I've earnt a beer....maybe I do some more...maybe I won't

So when I did my apprenticeship I had two bosses one really cool...he used to say never be scared of making a mistake....cos' then you'll get it right the next time!
The other boss was pretty blunt....it's $h!t Mick.....do it again....
So I messed up the cam action...
I blame the heat.........wanted it to come on cam pushing forward....that's not what I've got!
So....let's do it again....and better
New improved cable track for a much better fit no cable squirm gonna happen in there!
No cam action...bye bye...bigger diameter that'll give more pull for less push.
And found a much better bolt ....with a nice little extra register under the head....there'll be no slack or wobble in this shifter
And a start on the clamp/mount....might hear some clicky sounds tonight

Not yet....been flycutting on the lathe though
This little lathe is surprising me....it's got it's faults but does the job,did a 4" straight turn on power feed to see what it does accuracy wise for a parellel cut....an absolute whisker cut but 1.5 thou out over 4"...
..maybe I need better calipers or I've just got lucky!
