cyclist killed by passed out driver

in truth, probably not completely banned. I guess I embellished the point . But as he's only young he reckons the insurance cost would be prohibitive and he's not got a lot of dosh anyhow. He applied a few years ago to learn to drive and got turned down a couple of times and has given up. these days he quite prides himself on not needing to rely on a motor, reckoning public transport and a bit of legwork gets you anywhere.

I'm surprised that companies are turning down his requests to learn to drive. Can he not get a friend to teach him and then take the test?

As for insurance, besides having to pay a lot for being young / inexperienced, he shouldn't have to pay more. The Disciplinary Discrimination Act prohibits companies from charging more because of epilepsy. If your mate has trouble, Epilepsy Action can help.

Good though to hear about the public transport thing. Just a thought - does your local authority do an assisted transport scheme? When I couldn't drive I could apply for a transport pass which worked rather like a senior citizen's bus pass. Worth a go on that if it is available.

I have a friend who blacked out once for no reason, he had his license revoked for one year. He went for further examination, given the all clear and then given his license back. This was around 1996 so I presume things haven't changed and she would be under the same rules.

These blackouts do happen, and for the CPS to drop the case it must mean they believe they do not have the evidence to prove otherwise. If witnesses say she sped away before the crash and no brake lights were seen right up to hitting the lampost then it does indeed sound like a blackout or a fit of playstation type rage which I seriously doubt.

Absolute tragedy though, and I can only imagine the sense of injustice felt by the kids and husband.

As an aside theory, does the fact it was a big Range Rover with huge ground clearance have a part to play? If it was a little fiesta would she have been nocked to the side rather than dragged under... sorry for the morbid question but I really hate these huge monster cars.

^ Yes , surely one of the passengers would have stopped the weapon . Why would she be in such a large vehicle on her own .

What I don't understand is the claimed half of all people suffer from it . I don't know of anyone who has just blacked out so where are all these people ?

im staying firmly on the fence on this one, i can imagine both scenarios

1) she did indeed black out

2) its amazing how far you can travel when not concentrating - many years ago when i was an apprentice i had fitted new speakers in my parcel shelf, i was driving down my road on the way to work at about 7 in the morning, no one else about, turned my stereo on, thought i could only hear one speaker at the rear, stupidly I turned round and had a look. I hit the kerb with one wheel and by the time i turned round and figured what was going on i had traveled over 15 metres and hit a young sappling tree and dented my wing (tyre marks and lost hub cap gave away the distance). let me add i must have been going all of 10 to 15mph when i turned round, how far would you go at double the speed...)

I also got out my car and siad 'what the fook happened there then'

strange she knocked the lady over, crashed into a roundabout then got out and said 'what happened' how long was she out for? did she come about as soon as the car came to a rest? all a bit weird.
