Had a great day out yesterday with the local Association for the Blind, cycling offroad tandems in the Forest of Dean and thought I'd post as it wasn't something that I'd ever thought about doing.

Never having cycled a tandem at all, first time offroad with a stoker with no sight was an experience. The cycling was mostly flat along old railway lines although there were enough climbs and descents to keep it interesting, plus the supertanker turning circle of the tandem. I had to also remeber to say when to pedal and when to freewheel and when we were stopping but after a while we picked up a good pace and were flying along but if you think that cantis don't stop a solo imagine how (in)effective they are on a steel tandem!

Thoroughly recommend the experience and intend to do it again (plus a couple of road tandem trips to the pub!). I suspect other Associations around the country do similar events.

That's so great Ed.

I remember reading an article/ letter from a blind kid who goes out and does exactly this in America, in an old issue of Dirtrag, and it moved me to tears.

I think I might go investigate right now.
