Curious workshop ….

Was looking up a nice coffee table book on Japanese bike design (‘Japanese Steel’), when I came across the pic below. What’s going on? AI goop or master technique?

AI slop ruining the internet as usual. 😉

The book you mention is however excellent, and well worth the money. Beautiful presentation, great photography of the bikes and a wealth of historic detail on many marques I knew next to nothing about.

Pretty sure that’s a rare damascus steel forged and folded chainset. Highlander [Christopher Lambert 80s film, not esteemed retrobike member] had one on his Klein….

You have to forgive the mechanic for any errors - he is actually a carpenter if his workshop is anything to go by.

My god, the more I look, the more I pick up on dumb errors. Is this one of those "Our illustrator has made 100 deliberate errors. How many can you pick?" type of games?

One brake lever, and a modern one at that given the shape, feeding two brakes via 3 cables, one of which isn't wrapped under the bar tape and looks to be on the outside of the drop. Or is that how the new SRAM does it? The cable wrapping integrating with the lever is damn neat, that's the sort of style we expect from Campagnolo.

About the only thing AI got right (assuming it wasn't asked to "draw me an artisan in a workshop working on an impossible bike") was the dude doesn't have 6 fingers.

Though I must say, I often remove the rear wheel and install a dummy hub when I install a bottle cage with an awl - so that bit is correct.

AI Fakery which is becoming a pandemic & you just don’t know what is real anymore….You Tube & other sites full of AI crap!! It’s turning a lot of people off as we want to listen to real humans & see real truthful photography & film……. All this AI crap is a warning as Skynet will soon be here to rid this planet of Homo sapiens……
