I'm sure you're right.. we drove past that naval base en route to our first destination.. there was quite a few handsome looking sailors stood outside the bars dressed in white service dress.

Every morning a couple of fighter jets did a sweep of the island.. my kid was using a flight tracker app called 'Flight Radar 24' amazing how accurate this app was, it uses your GPS coordinates to show you details of planes in the sky, their flight path, destination and such.. it shows you private jets, helicopters ect but sadly, not the military jets.

I’m sure I read in the news that the US had jets there during recent activities. All I saw at the naval base were some rusting hulks of old ships!

In my family in the kid with Flightradar! When we were on the island was as the wildfires started in the south last year. There were a few sky crane helicopters going back and forth carrying water under them. Both interesting and worrying!

I’d go back to the same area again for sure but maybe earlier or later in the year when it’s a bit cooler.

It’s been like this^ across the Med for the last 5 / 6yrs.. wildfires just starting out of nowhere, it’s scary how fast they spread, we were driving through Sicily last year, on a main road passing through the countryside.. 400m ahead of us, I saw a small fire ignite, by the time we passed, less than a minute later, we had to wind the windows up and drive through plumes of smoke blowing across the road.. something the size of a campfire, spread to something covering a 30m stretch within seconds.

Having a kid of school age we’re restricted to the school hols.. we did go to Sardinia in October before he was born, the temps are much more palatable, the sea is still plenty warm enough to swim but a lot of the restaurants only open Thu, Fri, Sat and Sun so you can struggle to find good places to eat.

Same here for school hols but because my better half works in a school. We’ve had a year between kids going to Uni at the moment so have had funds to explore a bit further/more frequent breaks for a year. After next weeks hols that will come to a firm halt having just seen how much the next three years of uni is going to cost supporting our youngest!
