Not sure if this was a wind up, but I thought I'd put it out there, as these yoofs say.

Was in the LBS the other day, talking about the wheels I'm going to build up soon. I mentioned that I'd seen these snowflake wheels from this forum, and he came back with this crows foot lacing pattern.
Imagine one raidal spoke, with the ones either side crossing it.
Anyone here heard of it, or can show pics of their own?
Just a curiosity thing ,

Its not a wind up , beleive you ideally need a 36 holed rim to do it properly
I Googles it and got the instructions as the guy in my LBS challenged me to build one after I did a couple of snowflakes okay

Biggest problem for me was working out spoke lengths and here it stalled

Re:

Would be seriously interested to know how you get on as I fancy having another stab at something new

Re:

Hell, I'm not going to give them a go !

I want to see other peoples wheels, find out about their experiences building them. Do the spoke tensions vary between the crossed and radial ones ?
FWIW, I am building up 36s too !
Would they be a nightmare to keep true? Are they stronger than three cross wheels? That sort of thing

Thanks for the link MTS

I imagine you would lace up the radial spokes first, then put in some road spokes in order to measure the length you would need for the others.
Which begs the question, can the rim cope with the angle at which the spokes would enter it? Would the spoke bend, weakening it where it leaves the nipple? :?

Re:

Having though about and now owning a 36 hole front hub and rim (Disciple of 32 me) I'm going to have another go....

anyway here's what I had for a 32 spoke crows foot, 36 spokes makes for a cleaner build

B.T.W the claims made below aren't mine, in fact the whole article was lifted from the net a few years ago when I was looking for info and could be total B077ocks.....

32 SPOKE HYBRID CROW'S FOOT

It is possible to lace a 32 spoke wheel with a hybrid Crow's Foot pattern. A 32 spoke wheel laced like this alternates a Crow's Foot pattern with a radial spoke which groups the spokes in set's of 4. This lacing pattern, one Crow's Foot one radial, could also be used with 24 spoke wheels. While it can also be possible to lace other now common wheels with a hybrid Crow's Foot pattern, I feel that anything other than 32 or 24 spoke wheels would make a lacing that would not effectively use the qualities of a Crow's Foot pattern.

To lace with this hybrid, four spoke Crow's Foot pattern you need to use crossing spokes that are 2-cross length. You alternate lacing a Crow's Foot set of spokes with radial spoke, half the spokes are the crossing spokes and half are radial. This results in a wheel that has much better lateral strength than a conventional crossing pattern like a pure radial wheel, and also has the torque transfer qualities of a cross laced wheel. The best of both worlds, so to speak. I have used a lacing like this on my 32 spoke road bike rear wheel and found it to have the best riding qualities of any 32 spoke wheel I have ridden. Very high lateral strength and rock solid power transfer. The figure below shows a 32 spoke hub and partial rim laced with this hybrid pattern.

Re:

I've never tried one, 3-cross works so well, but I may have a go at the hybrid crow's foot pattern sometime.
I first read about it years ago in a book called "The Bicycle Wheel" by Jobst Brandt, well worth a read.

Re:

Crow's foot front on my patina Pro FRO that I put up for the BOTM. Never focused on the front wheel though.
PITA to lace, but looks different. Just wanted to do something different from every other spoke pattern in the collection.

Re:

Hmmmm, I'm not sure about doing a 32hole wheel this way. Don't undestand how the author thinks it gives a stronger wheel than conventional spoking.
I'll have a look around and see if I can find a picture of an actual wheel , rather than a compressed diagram

Good luck with yours fella  Have you done it yet?
