Crown Comet

Riggers

Retro Newbie
Hi all. I'm new to this site and thought I'd share some pics of a bike which has languished in my garage for about 40 years. Fortunately it's been covered in oil and well preserved. It's a very rare Crown Comet made in the 70s by a Birmingham firm called The Cyclo Gear Company of Crown Works. The frame is Reynolds 531 and it has some nice running gear on it although the original gears (Simplex) fell to pieces long ago and were replaced with Shimarno. I'll try to upload some pics now. Any comments or questions about the bike are welcome. It is for sale but at the moment I have no idea of its worth.

I like it a lot!

From a bit of research (it's also mentioned on this site in a post from 2011) it appears the frame on this bike is in fact a Carlton. I think Crown must have simply been an assembler of bits bought in, although the hubs do have a 'Cyclo - England' sticker on them. Also I think the name "Birmalux" was one of Cyclo's trade marks, which is the brand name stamped on the alloy wheels and saddle stem.

Other British kit fitted was the original front chain wheel set ('Stronglite') which sadly is no longer fitted due to early failure. A Carradice of Nelson bag, and a Miller dynamo. The brakes are Weinmann which I assume were German? The original blocks are still fitted.

All in all it's quite a curiosity!
