Could it be a Mountain Bike?

It's sold as a mountain bike because around 1986/7/8 this was the sort of thing that was made available for £99. Same as the Raleigh Mustang, various Falcons and apollos, the lowest of the low end.

But, heck it has chunky tyres, chunky grips and chunky bars so it must be an mtb because the bloke in the shop said it was

Pretty much this. My first mountain bike - an Emelle Silver Challenge - was very similar to this. Fun, but sometimes terrifying times - particularly in the wet in the hills of North Wales. I remember gripping the brake levers as hard as I could down one hill and still accelerating...
