how do i know what chain - chain rings- and cassettes are compatable? really struggling with this - would the jockey wheels need replacing too?

At the front:
All Mtb chain rings use the same chain pitch.
The only real difference is the chain ring bolt circle diameter (or Pitch circle diameter) which is the distance from the centre of the BB to the centre of the chainring bolt x2.
Chain ring spacing is so vague that you can mix and match mechs, chainsets and shifters to you hearts content.

At the back:
Remember also that there is limited compatibility between different manufacturers cassette spacing.
To account for this different manufacturers mechs have a different throw for the same amount of cable pull. Here the spacing is close, and things must be compatible. There are ways around it, but the best advice is if you want to go Shimano 8 speed (for example) then use all Shimano 8 speed bits.

Hope this helps. :D

COOL

thanks for taking the time to reply

at the front i have a shimano XT M739

at the back a shimano XTR M953 MEGA 9

WHAT CHAIN AND CASSETTE WILL I NEED (ONLY HAVE 8 SPD HUB)

I was in the same boat, having Shimano from 1997. Have a look on the shimano web site, all the tech docs are on there. Mine is an 8 speed set up. I bought a 8 speed cassette, M737 and got a 8 speed chain from chain reaction cycles, LG chain I think, but one the site said was for 8 speed. I also changed jockey wheels, they were only 6.99 from same site.
I'd never done this before, it was dead easy once I'd realised that the two jockey wheels wern't interchangeable.
Rides like a dream now.

Obviously the cassette choice is governed by what right hand shifter you'll be using.

If you want to stick with the 8-speed shifter, then any 8-speed cassette will do and any chain will do (8-speed or 9-speed)

If you wanted to go to a 9-speed shifter, then any 9-speed cassette would do (and would fit on your 8/9-speed hub), but you could only use a 9-speed chain, not an 8-speed.

Incidentally, the fact that you are using 9-speed mechs is immaterial to your choice - they just go where the shifter puts them, so they work equally well on 8-speed or 9-speed systems.

If it helps, I'm running a m739 XT rear mech in conjuction with a SRAM PG850 8 speed cassette and chain with no issues. In fact I was overwhelmed with the qualtiy of shifting that I have got especially seeing as the SRAM components are far cheaper then XT.. :D

y

my right hand shifter is XT M739 RAPID FIRE is it 8 or 9 spd? and does it matter?

my current hub only has a 7spd cassette but looks to be lost of room for at least 2 more cogs! i doubt that it is 9 spd compatable as it is a ringle bubba hub circa 1994 - (screw on)

so to sum up what do i need to get my bike running?

cassette 8spd what type?
chain what type?

and is everything else going to be ok or do i need to replace shifters?

Your M739 shifters are 8 speed.

BUT....you might struggle to find a screw on 8 speed block, most will be 7 speed I think?

I'd be very happy to be proved wrong though, 'cos that would open up a couple of interesting opportunities.
