Computer data storage and backing it up.

Yep you're on the money mate, USB memory sticks/SD cards/CF cards, etc. = no moving parts and considerably better shock resistance therefore more reliable for data volumes up to 16GB or so

I use a combination of 8GB USB sticks and a 500GB Toshiba external drive at home

For archiving large volumes of data (hi res raw photos, audio, video) a big stack of single layer (4.7GB) DVDs are a good choice provided they're well indexed, labelled and stored

For departmental/small organisation backup LTO3
 
Depends on what you need / want.

I use a NAS for home backup and storage. QNAP TS-209 with 2 x Raid1 1 TB drives.
If you're worried about everything going up in smoke you can connect 2 x devices over the internet via a TLS VPN

It also runs as a media server, WAS and pretty much anything else I want to run from it.

...or you could use a pen drive ;)
