Coaster brake rear hub help (more help!)

As some of you may know i've finished my klunker build (there's a link in my sig).

Well i thought i'd finished! Took it out for a spin and the brake is binding and the hub has developed a lot of play. This all happened in about a tenth of a mile on a brandnew hub.

As it sits still in the frame the brake arm that bolts to the chainstay is jammed solid.

Any ideas on the problem? If i start stripping the hub am i going to get pinged in the eye with a million tiny springs? Then not be able to put it back together again?

when you say the brake arm is jammed solid what exactly do you mean???? the arm shouldnt be able to move at all anyway......and when you say play do you mean like the cones are loose or the play before pedal take up????

and they are simple beasts inside...what is the make of the coaster brake?

Precisely... Which coaster hub is it?

To be frank the S..mano one is a POS only meant for kids bikes. The Czech favorit is little better. The only way to get a decent coaster hub these days is to find an old Torpedo one if you are lucky. They are like gold dust these days.

Last bike shop I worked in Copenhagen, we refused to sell the Shimano hub without a disclaimer as it just gave problems every time we sold one.....

bendix ones were the simplest and best imo........used to put the bendix inners into suntour shells......sweet......

As mentioned they are pretty simple inside, basicaly a screw that drives a brass collar out into the inner shell of the hub, the Velosteel one i have has been fine.

I have one stripped somewhere, will post a pic up later

The play in the hub is lateral, as if its i'n the cones.

As for the brake arm, the ones on the wife's bike you can easily twist them round when you are locating the bolts that hold them on the stays. This will only move into position with use of a hammer.

The hub doesn't have any markings on it but the brake arm has histop engraved on it.

There's about 5mm of play at the bearings. The sprocket is loose too.

sounds almost like it wasnt set up right before you have put it on the bike. Take it off, reset all the cones and locking nuts and try again.....they aint complicated so it should be something simple.......

...it was built up when you got it wasnt it???

Had a bit of time to look at this tonight.

Noticed something odd straight away, before i'd even removed the wheel. The drive side wheel nut was rather loose but the brake ride one was incredibly tight. I needed a hammer to loosen it off. These have got tighter and looser in operation. They were both reasonably tight on assembly. These are the nuts that attach the wheel to the frame, just to be clear.

Started to strip the hub. There is loads of play in the in the hubs, as expected. What i didn't expect is that the locknuts were incredibly tight against the cones.

Anyway, stripped everything down and reassembled. The internals are quite interesting. Very simple.

Its all back together now. Everything is tight but not over tight. The brake arm moves freely with the wheel out of the frame. I'm about to put it back in the frame and take it for a spin.

Yay. Just been for a shakedown. Only went a mile but passed the off licence so now adjusting the bottom bracket with a celebratory beer.
