Climate change - random thoughts from the Cheese

The government is in Copenhagen saying 'we must cut back emmissions'

whilst back home:

Dr.S' car scrappage scheme - keeping an older car on the road is less harmfull than buying a brand new car and all its associated co2 output in manufacturing. A second hand car already exists and can be owned by many people.

- a VW PD TDI 130 engine fitted to a huge number of scrappage scheme qualifiers is capable of returning over 60mpg and has a co2 output of around 145 thingies to the throckmorton. All our new Mondeo Taxis on 59 plates have barely averaged 37 mpg while they are still running in.

Digital switch over - How many perfectly good CRT televisions have been thrown away?? My local tip receives at least 150 - 300 a week easily. They also receive 20+ Freeview boxes that are no longer capable of being upgraded and therefor can no longer receive certain channels.

FM - possibly the biggest fraud taking place. The government flogged off the bandwidth ages ago so under the banner 'digital is better' we lose perfectly decent established FM transmissions to digital. Existing DAB receivers wont be able to be upgraded if the current 1980's based DAB is upgraded. Then theres the disposal of the 80 million + FM recievers, the change over of the 30 million+ car stereos...

Its driving me crazy.

I'm with on that last comment  But what can we do

Whilst the cat is away, let the mice play!
Grab grandads old rifle and tin hat, a handful of petrol bombs and give your neighbours a knock on the way out. See you in the square at 20:00hrs. Let the revolution begin!

oh.. look...0.4 warmer, oh no.. terrible...

I'm with you on this, the graph only covers the last 50 years! What about the last 4.5 billion, or don't they count? I studied Geology for my degree and what seems clear from the majority of non-government funded research, is that global warming or cooling has happened before and will continue to happen long after the human race has disappeared. When we have gone and other species wander the Earth they won't even know we existed as humans rarely end up in an environment condusive to fossilisation, (need an anaerobic environment and rapid burial)!

I'm not worried at all by global warming as I live on the top of a very big hill. the only thing I miss is sledging! :D

Now I don't want to be picky...

...

I'm all for reducing pollution (less fish with 3 heads etc), and in general persuading us all to be more careful with the earths resources.

However, climate change is due to much bigger issues than little old man can sort.

- solar flares,
- earth vibration,
- where we sit in an existing glacial period.

Global warming/ozone holes/climate change blah blah.

It's happening due to cycles on a geological timescale. We can do very little but ensure we are generally cleaner and more efficient.

Who coined the phrase GLOBAL WARMING with relation to the burning of fossil fuels? Maggie Thatcher - who at the time was in a personal war with Scargill to kill off the UK coal mining industry.

It's not too late to change things, it's just that changing will have little or no effect on the earths natural cycle.

TAXATION is the real issue. If the UK government wanted less emissions then they should have started building nuclear PSs in the late 80s when we needed them. They should be encouraging us to keep cars on the road for longer. They should be paying us to cycle to work (not the C2W scheme, but based on tax relief on distance traveled). They should put road tax on the cost of fuel to discourage higher mileage car use. They should encourage company car drivers to drive less - not MORE as the current taxation scheme does. Stopping the mindless situations like we export the same amount of beef to Belgium as we import from Belgium!!. The ridiculousness of the Prius brigade - the environmental damage done as a result of the mining/transpotation/emulsifying/transport/recycling of the batteries etc, etc.

Ha Ha, you spotted my deliberate omission of the "1" in front of 50. Glad you're awake! :)

I think you'll find Maggie was seriously concerned about levels of co2 in general, especially in cars, and trying to push forward lean burn engines as opposed to catalytic converters, which as mentioned before create vastly more co2. To infer that global warming was invented to try to kill off the coal industry is quite frankly BOLLOCKS!!!

Yes there are also natural factors having an effect but the speed at which the planet is warming up is unprecedented, which would be an enormous coincidence considering the planet is at its most industrialized it's ever been.

Language Timothy!!!!

How do you know it is unprecedented? What evidence do you have?

Geological record shows huge fluctuations in both temp and CO2 values, at times when man wasn't around.

Why was medieval Britain so warm? Significantly moreso than currently. Polar ice sheets are smaller now than they were in the 90s - but bigger than the late 60s/early 70s.

What comes first rising CO2, or warm periods?

No suggestion that MT coined the expression JUST to kill off the NUM. It is a political term, as opposed to a scientific term. Interestingly, it's not used much nowadays, as there is no convincing proof it is happening.

We are certainly polluting the planet - but creating global warming! I think you give us too much credit.
