Climate change - random thoughts from the Cheese

It does my head in when those adverts come on the TV telling me not to leave equipment in standby. Thanks to the manufacturers of said equipment I dont really have a choice as they took all my on/off switches away leaving me only with standby buttons. Shouldn't the goverment be targetting the manufacturers.

Modern cars are getting a bit feckin wide too aint they!!! Thats why they all need electric windows, cus you cant reach across to wind down the passenger window anymore. Imagine how many MPG you would get if you put one of those new fangled eco thingy engines in a mk1 Escort :lol:

This BB30 thing and tapered head tubes will make all our bikes obsolete pretty soon too. We will have to throw them all away and buy new ones, but thats okay cus it gives people jobs!!!

I was just talking today, If I put the ultra efficient TDI engine out my mega heavy passat into an old MK1 golf, it would go like stink and do the moon and back on a sniff of diesel!

Funny you mentioned TVs. California just banned the sale of standby TVs. And to compensate, they will start beaming in electricity via microwaves from Outer space with satilite solar panels.

Personally, I think I am entitled to a carbon footprint. 8)

Is it not true that the worlds oceans absorb most of the worlds CO2 and release it based on their temperature which is in direct relation to the amount of solar flares on the face of the sun?

These guys seem to think so

I know a well respected astronomer who observes the sun every day when it is visible. For the last year (at least) he hasn't observed any activity of any note. Hardly a solar flare worthy of the name. He says the only factor that can affect the climate is the sun. He is convinced the sun is starting a dormant phase that may well lead to a 'minor' cooling period similar to that seen a century or two ago, (the reason a lot of your Christmas cards show scenes of ice skating on rivers and lakes etc).

He doesn't believe human powered warming exists, (one of Gordon's Flat Earthers).
As I have pointed out to him, he is old and can afford to be wrong. The worst case senario for him is that his grave floods. For the rest of us, I would rather ere on the side of caution.

I seem to remember that program getting debunked as 'extremely one sided'!!!

Global warming/climate change/greenhouse effect is definitely happening, whether it is a caused by humans or naturally occurring events it doesn't really matter. The reason I say it doesn't really matter is because we're f*cked either way - If it is a naturally occurring event it will happen or not happen anyway. If it is caused by humans we are far too far down the route of consumption to be able to suddenly not need oil or electricity or running water for example. As someone who is in the field of sustainable building I have seen every aspect of the public's perception towards climate change and what we can do to try and lessen it's impact and I have to say probably 80% of people aren't fussed, as it hasn't started affecting them directly. When it does start directly affecting people in this country and other 'influential' countries (think china, india, usa), then, and only then, will people start giving a toss, and then maybe the governments might actively start doing something about it...maybe.

P.s. Jeremy Clarkson's column in last months Top Gear magazine is a particularly interesting insight into how governments think about things like co2 emissions... worth a read

CO2 emissions are easily quantifiable, which in turn is easily taxable.

CO2 = Tax

simples

What is undeniable though is our consumption of resources, we are consuming far more than the earth can replenish, this is the real issue imo :roll:

Agree with a lot of what you say there Rosco but i believe the vids i mention above are a retaliation of sorts to Al Gores' one sided documentary which was full of fabricated nonsense on global warming which got so much press a while ago. Doesn't he have business interests in buying and selling carbon credits?
